AMERICA/PERU - Encounter on Catholic Education organized by CELAM, amidst preparations for First International Congress on Catholic Education

Lima (Agenzia Fides) – This week, Santo Domingo is hosting a meeting of Catholic education delegates convened by the Latin American Episcopal Council - CELAM. According to information received by Fides, the meeting will be attended by representatives of the Boards of Catholic Education of the various episcopal conferences. Representing Peru will be Mrs. Maruja Torres, Executive Secretary of the Bishops' Commission for Education and Culture of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference.
At this meeting, whose theme will be “The Catholic School Teacher,” the participants will prepare a document for the bishops' conferences on Catholic schools. It will be developed on the basis of three consecutive meetings: the first in Bogota, with the theme: “Problems in Catholic Education in Latin America and the Caribbean in Light of Aparecida,” the second in Montevideo, with the theme: "The Plan for a Catholic School That is a Missionary Disciple," and the third, in Asunción, on the theme: "The Catholic School Principal."
Meanwhile, the National Bureau of Catholic Education in Peru has begun preparations for the First International Congress on Catholic Education, to be held August 4 to 6, which will feature speakers from abroad. During the Congress, "Missionary Disciple Teacher" medal will be awarded to the winner of a contest launched in March. There will also be prizes for the Diocesan Catholic Education Offices, as well as Catholic high schools and grade schools distinguished by their pastoral work in the context of the Great Continental Mission.
