ASIA/CHINA - Chinese Catholics learn the joy of voluntary work: more Catholics serving at centres for disabled persons and leprosy sufferers

Wednesday, 16 June 2004

Beijing (Fides Service) - A growing number of Catholics are volunteering to serve at “Hui Ling Community Service for People with disabilities” in Beijing, a Church run centre with the help of missionaries for children and young people with a disability or abandoned by the family. The volunteers help teachers and assistants working at the Centre.
As the word spreads Catholics in Beijing are learning the joy of voluntary service, something unheard of in China until recent years. Today more and more people are offering their services in the field of voluntary work creating a culture of gift and service which builds human and spiritual harmony.
In the north eastern provinces of GuangDong, Yun Nan and Shaan Xi, many Catholics offer voluntary service at centres for lepers run by Catholics nuns. Faith bulletin offers information about voluntary work, opportunities, needs, requests and it welcomes those who want to spend some of their time helping others.
