Pisco (Agenzia Fides) – As part of the reconstruction of areas hit by the earthquake of 15 August 2007, Caritas Peru has opened 78 homes in the towns of Montesierpe and Media Luna, in the Humaya District, Province of Pisco, Ica. All this was possible thanks to the solidarity and support of Caritas Luxembourg. Caritas Peru has sent a note Fides on the opening of these houses, with some photos of the event. The reconstruction project in the District of Humaya includes not only the construction of living units, but also of health services (construction of environmentally friendly kitchens and baths), a surveillance system for monitoring nutrition, and implementation of forms of production, such as breeding of guinea pigs and organic farming, said the project coordinator, Luis Peña.
For Avelina Subilete, who has benefited from the project Montesierpe, the aid received from Caritas has given meaning to her life, because she herself was involved in the construction of her house, and is is what most makes her value her work. Attending the opening ceremony and blessing of the houses was the Bishop of Ica, Bishop Hector Vera Colona, the Secretary General of Caritas Peru, Jorge Lafosse Quintana, the Mayor of the District Humaya, Claudio Pillaca, the head of the International Cooperation Unit of Caritas, Jennifer Bonilla, the families who would be moving into the homes, and the technical team of Caritas Emergency Response of Ica. Until now, the areas affected by the earthquake of 2007 (the Departments of Lima, Ica, and Huancavelica) have seen 961 new homes built with different materials: Quinche (straw), adobe (mud mixed with straw), and stone.
