AFRICA/GUINEA BISSAU - Lenten collections go to help seminaries

Saturday, 6 March 2010

Bissau (Agenzia Fides) – The offerings of the faithful of Bissau, collected during Lent 2010, will be sent to support the seminaries of the diocese. Until now, the seminaries have been supported by benefactors of sister Churches in Europe and North America. Father Bernardo Gomes, Rector of the Major Seminary of Guinea Bissau, in a notice sent to Fides, said that "Sister Churches should continue to help Christians in Guinea-Bissau. These countries cannot remain indifferent." According to the priest, the Catholic Church in Guinea needs to train their pastoral workers, "Our brothers, who have good jobs abroad, can help us." According to a message from the Archbishop of Bissau, His Excellency José Camnate na Bissing, the Year for Priests is an opportunity for Christians to offer physical and spiritual support to the "house" that trains future priests. The collections from Lent last year were given to Cumura Hospital, to purchase medicines for treating HIV/AIDS. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 6/03/2010)
