AMERICA/MEXICO - Archdiocese of Mexico City shows solidarity with Chile

Tuesday, 2 March 2010

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) – The Archdiocese of Mexico has sent condolences to the people of Chile for the loss and damage caused by the earthquake, and has asked parishes to pray, as has been done for the earthquake in Haiti. The Archdiocesan spokesman Hugo Valdemar Romero said that Cardinal Norberto Rivera, Archbishop of Mexico City, has given instructions to collect humanitarian aid. In the Mass officiated by the Cardinal himself in the Metropolitan Cathedral, he prayed for the people of Chile who “are experiencing this suffering, that they may not be overcome by discouragement, but through the power of faith and generosity of their brethren, they may feel the Lord's closeness." He also prayed for those injured in the earthquake, that "through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe they may soon regain health and be fortified in hope." Valdemar Romero said that in the tragic circumstances of the earthquake, "we join the Bishops of Chile, the people, and their President, with the hope that all Mexicans will be very generous in helping the people of Chile."
