AMERICA/HONDURAS - An hour less on the Internet and an hour more in prayer: a Lenten proposal from Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga

Thursday, 18 February 2010

Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) – Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, Archbishop of Tegucigalpa (Honduras), asked the many “Internet-dependent” to consider the proposal for an "Internet fast" this Lent, to devote this time to prayer. "Why not fast from the Internet?," the Archbishop of Tegucigalpa asked during the Mass celebrated in the Metropolitan Cathedral yesterday, Ash Wednesday, which was attended by hundreds of faithful. "There are people who are now dependent on the Internet, and during the time of Lent should say: I'll do one hour less of Internet and one hour more of prayer," said the Cardinal.
In his homily, the Cardinal said that there should also be a fast from "bad words," hatred, revenge, resentment, and many other negative feelings. He noted also that, given the high prices, to stop eating meat or fish in this season "is no longer fasting." He also urged Hondurans to solidarity, to share with others, in a world of growing hunger and injustice.
"This Lent is a time for us to show solidarity with those suffering from the economic crisis and with those who are struggling because they are sick, and perhaps with many others we know not," he said, announcing that he is heading to Haiti to deliver aid collected in recent weeks among the Catholic faithful of Honduras, for the victims of the January 12th earthquake. This contribution of Honduras "is really a sign of solidarity" for Haitians. Thousands of Honduran Catholics attended Mass on Ash Wednesday, in churches across the country.
