AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Regional Forum: “National Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Colombia”

Tuesday, 16 February 2010

Monteria (Agenzia Fides) – Today, February 16, in the city of Monteria, in northern Colombia, the Regional Forum "National Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Colombia" is being held. This event was convened by the National Conciliation Commission, to take concrete steps towards peace and reconciliation and to overcome the social armed conflict in the country. The Forum will be held at the Convention Center of Monteria, from 7am-4pm, with the participation of representatives of various sectors of society (unions, associations, young entrepreneurs) and the Bishops of the ecclesiastical province of Cartagena.
The regional forum will allow people to learn more about the initiative and thus, make a regional contribution on matters of peace and reconciliation policies to help overcome the existing conflicts in Colombia. The Colombian Church is working very hard, especially this year, to establish channels of dialogue between the conflicting parties. Recent news is that the Catholic Bishops have established bridges of communication with the so-called emerging gangs present in different regions of Colombia (see Fides 10/02/2010).
