Santiago (Agenzia Fides) – The Bishops' Conferences of Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Chile have announced the creation of a national collection to aid the rescue of the Haitian population which currently lacks all kinds of items. The Churches in Latin America have asked the international community to provide for immediate and urgent needs and have invited Christians to solidarity. In this regard, the Bishops' Conference of Chile has announced a second collection on Saturday the 23rd and Sunday, January 24th, "in all the Masses, depositing the proceeds to the account of Caritas Chile, which is channeling aid to the local church in Haiti.” The Bishops of Bolivia, Brazil and Ecuador have reported a similar initiative in each country. “With the aid of the specialized team of Caritas International, the resources will be distributed in coordination with local organizations in Haiti," according to the Bishops' Conference of Chile. The Mexican Bishops have also urged "all Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for this sister nation and cooperate generously in favor of our Haitian brothers." (AP) (Agenzia Fides 16/01/2010)
