Thursday, 7 January 2010

São Paulo (Agenzia Fides) - The National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, in São Paulo, has begun a solidarity campaign for the victims of recent floods in São Luiz do Paraitinga (SP). Three shipments of food supplies will be sent, and there will also be collections for other general need items such as candles, clothing, and drinking water. The campaign will last two weeks. The Sanctuary will send along all the donations of food that are made daily by pilgrims and devotees of Our Lady of Aparecida.
"Usually at the National Shrine we receive donations from the devotees of the Mother of Aparecida, the result of their answered prayers and in thanksgiving for the intercession of Mary Most Holy. The material, which during this year is donated to charity for the City, in the next two weeks will be put together with what the people have expressly donated to help people affected by this tragedy," said the Rector of the National Shrine, Father Darci Nicioli.
Since the rain began in the early days of December 2009, the total number of deaths in Brazil due to the rains has risen to over 80. Civil Protection officials have confirmed that during the early hours of January 1, an avalanche swept away the small beach of Pousada era Sankay. Another landslide occurred in Angra dos Reis, in the same municipality of Ilha Grande, where there are 37 dead. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 07/01/2010)
