AMERICA/PERU - “Eucharist, nourishment for Mission”: as part of the great city Mission in the archdiocese of Lima the month of June is dedicated to the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Sunday June 13 solemn procession for Corpus Christi.

Tuesday, 8 June 2004

Lima (Fides Service) - For the whole of the month of June, the second lap of the Great City Mission “Remar Mar Adentro”, opened with the solemn sending of more than 10,000 evangelisers who are going from door to door to visit every family in the large archdiocese of Lima, will focus its attention on the mystery of the Eucharist.
In fact the mission programme assigns a special theme for each month. The monthly activities consist in a first stage of formation with the study of a particular Church document followed by a stage of celebration relative to the theme to which the month is dedicated and a third stage of recreational activities to encourage people to come to the parish and to strengthen bonds of universal friendship and brotherhood.
During the month of June Catholics in the capital under the guidance and with the assistance of Bishops, parish priests and evangelisers will reflect on and celebrate the theme of “The Eucharist, Nourishment for Mission”. To do this they will reflect on: the Pope Apostolic letter “Dies Domini” and the Encyclical “Ecclesia de Eucharistia”.
On Sunday 6 giugno, solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, the diocese opened “Parish Eucharist Week ”, with the aim of rediscovering the centrality of the Eucharist in the life of the Church and therefore renew devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. In view of this each parish will hold a series of 6 catechesis on different aspects: the Eucharistic Mystery, Eucharistic Celebrations, Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with particular intentions, daily exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, celebrations of the Sacrament of Confession for longer hours to allow the faithful to prepare to receive Holy Communion worthily. Friday will be a special day dedicated to visiting the sick and the dying, taking them Holy Communion the source of hope and strength.
At the end of this intensely Eucharistic week, on Sunday June 13, solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, there will be a solemn concelebration of the Eucharist in Cathedral presided by Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, Archbishop of Lima and Primate of Peru, with the papal Nuncio Archbishop Rino Passigato, and a large number of priests, religious and lay members of confraternities, schools and Institutions. After Mass the Corpus Christi procession will circle Plaza Maggiore, where florists will lay 30 artistic carpets of flowers. Cardinal Cipriani, recalling Pope John Paul II’s concern that all activity to realise the mission of the Church should be ordered to the Euchariast as its summit (cfr Ecclesia de Eucharistia, n. 60), underlines the importance of the Eucharist in the process of new evangelisation launched in the capital: “the Eucharist is the source of the faith and the summit which every believer must reach”.
The month of May was dedicated to a “Saint Mary, Mother and Star of New Evangelisation” with reflection on Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter “Rosarium Virginis Mariae” and activities to encourage Marian devotion including the recitation of the Rosary and the Novena to Our Lady of Evangelisation Rosario, and processions with the image of Our Lady.
