Brussels (Agenzia Fides) – On November 26, the Council of the European Union ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It is an unprecedented step forward, as it is the first document on human rights to be ratified by the EU. From now on, all EU institutions should take into account the values of the Convention in all policy areas within their jurisdiction, including those of development cooperation. Furthermore, all EU Member States will be bound to review laws and programs. The ratification is also of great importance to the AIFO (Italian Association “Amici di Raoul Follereau”), as the Convention was established with contributions from the IDDC (International Disability and Development Consortium), of which AIFO is a founding member.
