ASIA/INDIA - World Missions Sunday in the wake of the Indian Missionary Congress

Friday, 16 October 2009

Bombay (Agenzia Fides) - “World Missions Sunday has an important significance for the Catholic community in India, especially this year, as we will also be celebrating the end of the Indian Missionary Congress, taking place October 14-18 in Bombay.” This is what Agenzia Fides learned from Fr. Ignaci Siluvai, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in India.
The missionary emergency was at the focus of an historic event: the first National Missionary Congress of the Church in India. The objective was to encourage greater missionary awareness in India, making greater efforts, learning new ways to spread the Gospel and cherish the cultural inheritance of the Church in India. Over 1,500 delegates from all over India were present, reflecting on the theme: “Let Your Light Shine,” reminding all the faithful that the missionary task is not only for Bishops and priests, but for them as well.
Simultaneously, all the dioceses received material and posters of the inspiring figure of Sr. Alfonsa, the Indian religious who was canonized on October 12, 2008. “The liturgical supplements were made available in the various local dialects of India, to reach out to as many as possible in spreading missionary awareness,” Fr. Siluvai told Fides.
“Our objective is that of making World Mission Sunday an opportunity for every baptized Catholic to rediscover their identity of evangelizer,” the National Director of the PMS said. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 16/10/2009)
