ASIA/MYANMAR - A special ministry of evangelization, in the Year for Priests, for two new priests of the Diocese of Banmaw

Thursday, 24 September 2009

Banmaw (Agenzia Fides) – They have just begun their ministry in the Year for Priests and they could not be happier for this gift of Divine Providence. We are talking about the two new priests from the Diocese of Banmaw: Fr. John Bosco Mung Sawng and James Awng Enana, ordained last April. “The Year for Priests is a special year for us as priests and having it be our first year of ordination is a great sign of the grace the Lord has given us,” the two told Agenzia Fides.
This year, which will be very memorable for the two, they will be working on evangelization in remote villages and tribal areas, who have never heard of the Gospel. They have been sent on their missions by their Bishop Raymond Sumlut Gam of Banmaw.
In addition, the two priests will offer their personal testimony to the youth who visit the Vocational Center in the Diocese of Banmaw, where they themselves visited at the beginning of their vocation. “For us, this is like giving back to God what He has granted us and being His instruments,” the two young men said, as they begin their ministry with enthusiasm.
“While in the past, news of Christ reached Myanmar by foreign missionaries, today it is our duty to evangelize the people and bring a ray of hope and love to the lives of the poor and marginalized,” they said.
Today, the Diocese of Banmaw has 26,770 baptized in a civil population of 407,000 people. There are 12 parishes, 19 priests, 58 religious, and 167 catechists. Since the erection of the Diocese, in 2006, the Catholic population has grown significantly thanks to the work of evangelization carried out by priests, religious, and laity.
