AMERICA/ARGENTINA - Bishop of Puerto Iguazu visits tornado disaster area to express Church's solidarity with victims

Thursday, 10 September 2009

Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) – After a tornado tore through the City of San Pedro on the night of September 7-8, Bishop Marcelo Raul Martorell of Puerto Iguazu went to visit the towns of Santa Rosa, Pozo Azul, and Tobuna, to express his closeness as a Pastor to the victims of the tragedy and to pray for the dead and their family members.
According to official sources, there are currently a dozen dead and over 50 wounded, and homes in the area have been severely damaged. In order to coordinate the various forms of aid coming from the parishes and missions in the province, and in other provinces as well, the Bishop has opened the doors of the Diocesan Caritas Centers. The faithful who wish to show their solidarity are, therefore, encouraged to offer donations to the parish Caritas networks.
A statement issued by Caritas of Northeastern Argentina (NEA), the area to the south of the Diocese of Puerto Iguazu, thanked the “immediate solidarity response from the Argentinean people” and assured of their prayers “to Mary, that she may offer her consolation to all those who have lost their loved ones in the tornado, and that she may protect the families effected.” (GT) (Agenzia Fides 10/9/2009)
