ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Educating in “ecological evangelization” in Korean dioceses

Wednesday, 22 July 2009

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) - “Ecological evangelization” is the term coined by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Korean Bishops' Conference, for spreading awareness among the faithful regarding the problems and responsibilities of ecology, protecting the environment, and safeguarding Creation.
The Commission has launched an educational program called “Ecological Evangelization” that will be implemented in all Korean dioceses, to reflect on the reality and needs of ecology in Korea: “the future of the earth and order of Creation that the Lord has established is at stake,” the Commission says.
“Our society is accustomed to neglecting the order of God's Creation, ignoring the values of the ecological system, as is evident in the massive building projects underway in Korea.” Thus, there is an urgent need to “transform the secular economy into an ecological economy.”
In 2008, the Commission published a small book entitled “The Christian mission in Creation: towards ecological healing,” analyzing the environmental problems at the light of the Church's social doctrine.
The text and other audio-visual material will be used in the campaign launched by the Commission, that seeks to instruct the youth and adults on being more aware of the need to protect the environment and insist on lifestyles and personal decisions that each one can make in respecting nature.
The project will also be supported by the Association of Superiors of Male and Female Religious Orders in Korea, who will organize seminars in all the dioceses. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 22/7/2009)
