ASIA/MYANMAR - New formators for evangelization in Myanmar

Monday, 6 April 2009

Yangon (Agenzia Fides) – The formation of priests, religious, and laity is essential for the mission of the Church and is very important in proclaiming the Good News. This is why the Myanmar Institute of Formation continues to educate and offer the local Church both religious and laity who can work in the area of evangelization.
Recently, 10 priests, 9 sisters, and a lay woman received their diploma in a ceremony attended by Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic Delegate in Myanmar, numerous Bishops, religious, and laity.
“Every Catholic institute of formation should be above all a place to meet the living God, who in Jesus Christ has revealed His love and truth,” Archbishop Pennacchio said at the ceremony.
The Institute proposes an itinerary of formation for 3 years, which includes summer courses, special gatherings, seminars outside the country, etc. depending on the specialization. The Institute is linked to the Pontifical Theological School of Dublin, which acknowledges their credits. It was begun in Myanmar by the Society of Saint Columban, upon the request of the local Bishops, in 2003.
There are courses on various topics, including: anthropology, Christian vocation, human development, spirituality, family counseling, sexuality and celibacy, Christian prayer, Christian doctrine, and spiritual direction.
The Institute's Director Fr. Michael McGuire, of the Society of Saint Columban, highlighted that the formation is always meant to help the candidates grow in faith and hope. “The studies and efforts of those who attend the institute are a seed of hope for the Church in Myanmar,” he said, encouraging the new graduates to respond to the challenge that awaits them in spreading the Gospel.
