AFRICA/ANGOLA - “An assessment that has surpassed our highest expectations,” Nuncio in Angola tells Fides, following the visit of Benedict XVI

Luanda (Agenzia Fides) - “We give thanks to God and to the Holy Father for his visit to Angola,” Fides was told by Archbishop Angelo Becciu, Apostolic Nuncio in Angola, where on March 23, Pope Benedict XVI concluded his visit.
“Benedict XVI's visit has positively marked the history of Angola and that of the local Church. The assessment of this event has far surpassed our highest expectations. First of all, in terms of the truly impressive participation of Angolan faithful. Over 1 million people took part in the Mass on Sunday, March 22. The streets were literally invaded by crowds wanting to greet the Holy Father. Even yesterday, along the road taken by the Holy Father to reach the airport, the 'Pope-mobile' had trouble moving along smoothly because of all the crowds trying to greet Benedict XVI. The joy that we have had as a result of this visit is, therefore, the first gift that the Pope has given us and it is one that is visible on the faces of Angolans. From there, we can find the strength to continue on our mission of announcing the Gospel with a renewed spirit, in communion with the Holy Father,” the Nuncio commented.
