AMERICA/COLOMBIA - This Christmas, the Bishops invite the people to be illumined by the Light who is Christ and who shows us the way to peace

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) – The Bishops of Colombia have issued a Christmas Message addressed to all people, reminding them that this liturgical period is “an invitation to let ourselves be illumined – in our minds, hearts, and actions – by the perfect Light who is Christ, the Son of God who has become one of us in the Virgin Mary's womb.” He is the Light that “lights the path to peace.” And what is the light that leads to peace? This is the question posed by the Bishops.
For families, it is “the light of coexistence in love that leads us to overcome all the difficulties, to strengthen our bonds, and to remain united.” For those who govern the country, “it is the light to seek the common good above all other interests – as individuals or groups.” For those who build society, this light is the “solidarity that urges us to place all our talents and capacities at the service of the country, for the establishment of equal opportunity for all people.” For those who fight for their rights amidst difficult conflicts, “it is the light of justice,” and, on the contrary, for those who have taken up arms, in an effort to thus change society, it is “the light of a radical change that leads us to abandon mistaken paths of violence and enter on the path to dialogue...of reparation for the damage caused.” Also, for those who have chosen the path of drug-trafficking, illegality, and delinquency, they can receive “the light of getting back on the right path, the full acceptance of justice, the fulfillment of their duties as citizens.” For the victims of injustice and violence, the light that will lead them to peace will be “the restoration that permits them to walk in reconciliation and pardon.”
For those who have been called to shepherd the Church of God, “it is the light of love that comes forth from the Good Shepherd who urges them onward in surrendering their lives in dedication, sparing no effort.” And for the members of the Christian people of God, “it is the light that lead them, through an acceptance of the Word and a reception of the Sacraments, to become authentic disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ.” In conclusion, for everyone, the Bishops say, “it is the light that shines forth love,” “the tender mercy of our God,” through the One who took our flesh to lead us on paths of truth and life.” (RG) (Agenzia Fides 17/12/2008)
