Thursday, 4 December 2008

Rome (Agenzia Fides) – Uniting efforts in society, to fight violence and terrorism: this is the goal of the Catholic laity in Bombay, in the aftermath of the recent attacks in their city.
The people are still terrified and traumatized by the attacks and the association “Bombay Catholic Sabha,” which is formed by the laity of the city, has organized a demonstration today, December 4, in order to show their disapproval of any kind of violence. The event is entitled: “Citizens against terrorism.”
The demonstration, which will pass through the city's center and the areas hit by the attacks, was organized in collaboration with other organizations of civil society, such as: Citizens for Justice and Peace” (CJP), “Communalism Combat”, “Muslims for Secular Democracy”, with numerous adhesions among student and youth groups like “Democratic Youth Federation of India”.
The forum of organizations notes that India is experiencing a rising wave of terrorism that is already claiming hundreds of innocent lives: “In addition to Bombay, many cities like Bangalore, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Surat, Delhi, Thane, Malegaon, Modasa have been attacked. In some cases, those responsible are Islamic fundamentalist groups and in others, Hindu ones. We cannot forget the attacks in Orissa, Karnatake, and other states, which have raised a series of questions as to respect for the law.”
To offer a “no” to this widespread violence, the organizations have called all the citizens of good will that wish to live in peaceful coexistence and social harmony, to come and participate in this public demonstration in downtown Bombay, in representation of the entire nation.
The participants, members of various different religions, will work to spread awareness and speak out against all forms of violence in society, working to create a climate of respect for rights, justice, reconciliation, and peace. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 04/12/2008)
