AMERICA/CHILE - Christian businessmen call for the use of “ethical and moral criteria in decision-making” regarding the economic crisis

Santiago de Chile (Agenzia Fides) – The Social Union of Christian Businessmen (USEC), in union with the appeal made by the Chilean Bishops (see Fides 24/10/2008), have asked that all move with ethical principals in facing the economic crisis.
In a statement issued by USEC, the businessmen ask for the use of “ethical and moral criteria in decision-making, including respect for the dignity of workers, on-the-job security and just wages, care for families, and the global development of the country.” They also ask that a “fruitful and permanent dialogue be established with the government, workers, and social groups, as well as the Church, in order to collaborate in taking action.”
The businessmen ask that the government “promote policies that offer employment opportunities, so as to provide jobs for the largest number of people possible.” They denounce the fact that “the restrictions that have been imposed in contracting and laying-off workers lead the businesses to take advantage and reduce their workforce for the needs of the company, given the nature of the court decision that has led to the lay-off.” “With the current workplace legislation, there is a risk for more lay-offs in times of crisis and less employment in normal economic conditions.” Thus, the businessmen find it necessary that a work policy that promoted employment be establishes, and not one that goes against this.
In their message, the USEC say that in order for the poor to be able to enjoy the growth of the nation, the State must use “principles of solidarity” that offer access to housing, health, and education, which are the basic conditions for facilitating “the right to a decent job and a just wage to those who are currently outside the system.” They also mention that “in times of crisis, the social role of the company is placed to the test,” and in these circumstances, “principles like participation and solidarity allow for the possibility of facing these situations with discernment and quest for the common good.” (RG) (Agenzia Fides 28/10/2008)
