Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) – Thousands of people took part in the Second National Citizens’ March for Life that was held yesterday, September 10, in front of the legislative offices. The March was organized by the National Movement of Pro-Life Citizens – Brazil Without Abortion, and the motto was: “Why legalize death, when what we want is life?”. The March took place three days after Brazil’s Independence Day.
“It is not enough to be pro-life, we have to take our beliefs into the streets and public places; that is the only way to make Congress hear our voice. That is why the word of the day is: ‘permanent action’.” This was what organizers said, as they mentioned that 93% of the Brazilian population is “against abortion.”
Jose Miranda, legal representative for the march and lawyer for the Pro-Life and Pro-Family Association, said that the demonstration was “a legitimate, active, and authentic act on the part of the Brazilian population in defense of life. It is clear that the people are against abortion. They will never accept death.”
There was also a large group of young people from the Youth Ministry groups of Brazil, who shouted: “We have a thousand reasons to live.” “We are here because we are fighting for life and we want to make other youth aware of the importance of this value,” one of the girls said. For the youth, the March entered to form part of the preparatory process for the National Youth Day scheduled to take place in October. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 11/9/2008)
