EUROPE/ITALY - Mother Paola Iacovone elected General Superior of the Hospitaller Sisters of Mercy

Rome (Agenzia Fides) – Mother Paola Iacovone was elected Superior General of the Hospitaller Sisters of Mercy at their 43rd General Chapter in Loreto, which is taking place August 25 to September 15 (see Fides 29/7/2008). According to a statement sent to Agenzia Fides, the election of the new Superior by the 33 Chapter members representing the entire Congregation, took place yesterday, September 8. The election of the Council Members that will accompany the Superior General and the drafting of guidelines for the institution for the next 6 years will be the main tasks remaining during the Chapter.
Dedicated to the area of hospitals and assistance, the Hospitaller Sisters of Mercy were founded in Rome in 1821 by Princess Teresa Orsini, whose process for Beatification is underway. They work in hospitals and care centers in Italy as well as in the United States, India, Madagascar, Philippines, Argentina, Switzerland, Nigeria, and Poland.
