AMERICA/BRAZIL - Bishops and Caritas Brazil launch a campaign “SOS Northeast” to help over half of a million victims of heavy flooding

Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - The National Conference of Catholic Bishops in Brazil (CNBB) has joined efforts with Caritas of Brazil in launching a campaign entitled, “SOS Northeast,” to help families affected by the heavy flooding that has hit the northeast part of the country. This area, known for its droughts and poverty, has endured heavy downpours since the beginning of March that have caused several rives to overflow, thus causing the intense flooding. According to the most recent reports from the National Civil Defense Secretary, there have been 540,000 affected by the rains and 71,373 evacuees. There are a total of 299 districts affected: Estados de Ceará (33), Maranhão (40), Paraíba (101), Pernambuco (42), Piauí (35) y Rio Grande do Norte (48). The heavy rains have also destroyed homes, hospitals, schools, motorways, and agricultural facilities and fields...
Hundreds of tons of food and a large quantity of medicines are being distributed by the Civil Defense fund to the people affected in the six states. There are also great health measures being taken to avoid diseases and respiratory illnesses. Although the rains seem to have died down, health authorities now fear a dengue epidemic like that of Rio de Janeiro, where at least 79 are reported dead from the disease (see Fides 10/4/2008). The flooding is considered serious, as the cities are not built to withstand heavy rains, especially in the semi-arid zones, where there is a constant threat due to drought. The rains are predicted to last until May, although with a decreased intensity.
“The economic resources that are collected will be sent directly to purchase food, medicines, mattresses, and clothes,” members of Caritas of Brazil explained. “We will also be working to re-build houses, restore potable water sources, and for taking preventative measures that are needed,” they added. The aid campaign for the people of the northeast region will last until July 15. Donations can be made in the Bank of Brazil or in Bradesco Bank.
