AFRICA/KENYA - Murdered Kenyan MP was a Catholic social activist

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides)- “Mugabe Were a Catholic social activist, shot dead yesterday outside his home, was married to an Italian women from Lecce” local Church sources in Kenya told Fides. Mugabe Were was an MP for the Democratic Movement, led by Raila Odinga, the opposition leader who protests against the victory of President Mwai Kibaki in elections on 27 December 2007.
Yesterday 28 January two gunmen waiting in front of his house shot Mugabe Were dead as soon as he arrived while he was still in his car.
“Hon. Were frequented a Youth Centre in Nairobi opened by Comboni missionary Fr. Adelmo, who has retired to live as a monk in Ethiopia. He worked with Fr. Moscatelli, on the issue of Nairobi refuse dump. Everyone who knew his is deeply dismayed. He was very active in the social field ” the sources told Fides. “We suspect he may have been killed by members of the Mungiki sect involved in illegal activities in the slums”.
The news of the shooting triggered fresh disorder in Kibera Mathare slums in Nairobi. The front line in Kibera is the railway which runs through it dividing Kikuyu people (the President's tribe) from other ethnic groups which support the Opposition leader.
