La Paz (Agenzia Fides) - “We hope that the fraternal, sincere and constructive dialogue which the whole country awaits, will start as soon as possible" said the secretary general of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Bolivia in a statement entitled "Peace in justice, truth and freedom" issued on the eve of the presentation of the text of country's new Political Constitution and autonomous Statutes. The secretary general was echoing the words of the President of the Bishops' Conference Cardinal Julio Terrazas, who said he hoped "foreseen actions will take place in a climate of peace, avoiding the use of words or gestures which could exacerbate minds or incite violence".
“It is not easy to speak of peace while a conflict is going on, and worse when this conflict is even supported and encouraged. However there is no better word to straighten the paths of pain and death”. A peace, the message says, “based on love and reconciliation, intrinsic of justice, truth and freedom”.
The Bolivian Bishops appeal to the hearts of the people, from which can come new sentiments and attitudes of fraternity and peace”. They say they are sure dialogue can never fail since it is “characteristic of those who intend to discuss difficulties in order to find suitable solutions”. They call on the parties to put aside selfish and ambiguous attitudes because “Bolivia deserves much more than its present condition and together we can save our country”. "I wish to knock on the doors of every heart and consciences and to urge people to put aside excessive enthusiasm or excessive pessimism, let us seek together with realism to do what is necessary and achieve what is needed” said Cardinal Terrazas.
“May we all welcome with sincere spirit the central Message of Christmas, and make it transform our country into 'Peace on Earth'!” the statement concludes. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 17/12/2007; righe 22, parole 314)
