OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - Pontifical Mission Societies launch “alternative Christmas gift” campaign

Monday, 10 December 2007

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) - The Pontifical Mission Societies in Australia have launched a campaign for a Christmas not of consumerism but of solidarity and support for the missions, encouraging people to exchange 'alternative' gifts. The PMS office has opened a Gift Registry, accessible also on-line, “buy presents for people who already have everything”. The suggested gifts are support for programmes in aid of community, children and church in various parts of the world.
For example you can “buy” a quota of a food programme for children in Haiti; support a catechist in the Philippines; help to renovate a Seminary in Burkina Faso. The missionary gift registry offers a choice of 50 gifts ranging from 20 to 50 dollars. “The Gift registry is designed for those people who are difficult to buy for, who may have everything they need, but would appreciate a donation on their behalf. You choose the area of work, the recipient of the gift will receive a certificate explaining which area of work your donation will go to”. The recipient will realise that the money for a gift for him was sent to help people in need, suffering from hunger and poverty.
