EUROPE/ITALY - “Migration and ethical issues” - Meeting at the Pontifical Urban University 28 November

Tuesday, 27 November 2007

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - Immigration is spoken of every day, usually to underline its problems. In this complex situation it is important to go to the heart of the matter and address the ethical issues involved, that of the presence of the immigrant and that of society's being, understanding of self and manner of relating . The other person helps me to understand myself, and this understanding forces me to ask myself who I want to be towards the other. Immigrants are not a temporary presence and they ask us to re-understand ourselves with them.
To start a dialogue on this subject, the Fondazione Scalabrini, the Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI) and CSER have organised on 28 November from 9 - 13 at the Pontifical Urban University, a Meeting on the theme "Migration and ethical issues”. Among the many possible aspects on which to dwell reflection will focus on only a few. After an address of welcome from the rector Mgr. Ambrogio Spreafico and Fr. Gaetano Parolin, president of the Fondazione Scalabrini, there will be the first session on the theme “Migration and the ethical question”. Speakers will include Aldo Vendemiati of the Pontifical Urban University (Migration, globalisation and ethical pluralism ), Paolo Carlotti Pontifical Salesian University (The common good and migrants: inclusion and exclusion) and Martin McKeever, of the Academy Alfonsiana (Migration and justice: rhetoric and ethical theory). Speakers at the second session 'Migration and intercultural difficulties' will include Giannino Pian of the Carlo Bo University of Urbino (From rights of individuals to the rights of cultures") and Francesco Viola of the University of Palermo (Deliberative democracy and multiculturalism).
