AMERICA/PERU - Successful parish plan anti domestic violence in areas of high social risk

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - In view of Anti Domestic Violence Day on Sunday 25 November, a number of parishes in Lima, including the parish of Our Lady of Cocharcas, has succeeded in reducing domestic violence using a Model of Integral Attention MAI. This social initiative of the archdiocese of Lima was launched in new densely populated districts of the capital, as the Church's contribution to overcoming domestic violence.
Fr Jesús Mendoza, parish priest of Our Lady of Cocharcas said that thanks to this initiative his parish, situated in an area of high social risk, experts offer counselling and assistance to elevate the moral and family level in hundreds of homes in central Lima.
A net work of solidarity and integral care for victims of domestic violence in Lima, works to improve the living conditions of the families and offer counselling with the help of a teal of psychologists, lawyers and social assistants. The initiative promoted by the archdiocese of Lima is funded by the Fondo Italo-Peruviano and sponsored by the Institute for University Cooperation. Caritas Lima is also involved. Three, the main objectives: stop violence in families, strengthen bonds of affection and help to build a society of more justice and solidarity.
The project consists of 12 Models (MAI) in 12 parishes in high risk areas. Since the experience started in 2005, more than 3,800 people have received integral care, 18.000 have received attention from specialists, there have been 500 interventions and 1.500 activities of psychological counselling.
