ASIA/HONG KONG - Study Day: Priests, religious, deacons and seminarians discuss diocesan Social Communications methods, tools and strategies

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) - At the end of September Catholic priests, men and women religious, deacons and seminarians attended a Study Day on diocesan social communication strategies. The diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao said the Study Day was preside by auxiliary Bishop. John Tong, and among those present Dr Dominic Y. Yung, supervisor of the Diocesan Audio-Visual Centre, who illustrated new methods and technology used in diocesan communications service, including a “Church news web site" and a "Religious Film Deposit”. Underlining the important role of the media for evangelisation, Bishop Tong said that bishops, clergy and religious must have contact with the media. "We must be familiar with all kinds of media and know how to use them to make sure the media do not give false reports about the Church” the Bishop told those present.
“The Church news web site opened two and a half years ago, offers, besides news of the local Church, a daily press review on the 6 most read newspapers and other Hong Kong media, radio and television channels. This service has produced material for an archive most useful for studying the media phenomenon and the present situation ” Dr Dominic Y. Yung explained. “The Religious Film Deposit contains thousands of DVD and CD, one third have Chinese subtitles. The contents are useful for pastoral work and formation”. At the Study Day there was also the presentation of a documentary film which retraces the steps of the first Catholic missionaries in south east Asia and China.
