Yangon (Agenzia Fides) - Myanmar's Christians, like the rest of the population, are suffering because of the difficult situation in the country and wish to pray to God for the gift of reconciliation and peace. To do this they have requested government permission to organise a special week of prayers for the good of the nation.
A joint request, presented by Archbishop Charles Maung Bo, Catholic Archbishop of Yangon, who is president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference, and Protestant Archbishop Samuel Mahn san Si Htay, chairman of the Myanmar Council of Churches, addressed to General Than Shwe reads: “every year from 28 September to October 4 Myanmar's Christians unite to celebrate a week of prayer for national reconciliation”. This is the 5th consecutive year and “we wish to do our best to foster unity, peace, justice and overall development in the country. All Christian leaders are instructing the faithful in this regard”.
The request addressed to General Than Shwe reads as follows: “We Christian bishops, priests religious leaders are concerned for the situation of the nation and taking as a foundation the teachings of our religion based on love, truth, justice, forgiveness and reconciliation and considering the present situation, we humbly request you to act with moderation and fatherly love and to reach a peaceful solution to ensure stability and peace and non-violence as the people desire”.
