Mogadishu (Agenzia Fides) - Hunger in central and southern Somalia, according to an alert raised by UNICEF, could kill at least 13,500 children.
The UN delegate said the area, once the country's granary, has become impoverished because of drought.
“At least 83.000 minors in these regions do not get enough food and as many as 13,500 are seriously under nourished and in danger of death ”, an official UN statement reads.
Besides drought Somalia faces yet another humanitarian emergency. Since January this year more than one million people have moved away from their homes in search of adequate medical care in Mogadishu. In eight months the number of displaced persons increased by 50%. (AP) (14/9/2007 Agenzia Fides; Righe:16; Parole:135)
