Jammu (Agenzia Fides) - To counter religious extremism, ethnic discrimination and corruption in Indian society religious leaders led by the Catholic Bishop of Jammu-Srinagar, Bishop Peter Celestine Elampassery, have formed a National Regeneration Movement. The movement aims to promote harmony among the various faith and ethnic communities in India and to draw attention to the positive values which unite all believers. It also encourages people to work together for national harmony and development.
The members of the movement say India must contain the following: the typical spirit of Islam, the concept of unity in diversity, typical of the Hindu religion, the courageous and compassionate heart and non violence present in the Sikh, Jain and Buddhist religions, the intellect and initiative of the Parsi and the will, perseverance and fidelity to the Law of the Jews and the spirit of love and forgiveness and sacrifice for other at the heart of Christianity.
The movement started in Kashmir is spreading across India. Besides organising prayer meetings and cultural events, the movement promotes active solidarity to help those in need regardless of religion or ethnic origin especially orphaned or poor children.
During a recent Convention in Jammu, the members of the Movement said it was important to work in schools with children and young people to increase awareness and prevent them from falling into the trap of religious extremism, radicalism and corruption, so they may be good future citizens .
