AFRICA/ETHIOPIA - Tenth Anniversary of the Eparchy of Bahir Dar-Dessie: A Testimony of resilience and God's saving work

Wednesday, 14 January 2026

Bahir Dar (Agenzia Fides) – The Amhara region is characterized by a lively calendar of religious and cultural celebrations during the month of January. Bahir Dar, in particular, stands out as one of the cities where these events are celebrated with enthusiasm, despite the ongoing conflict affecting the area. Among the highlights are the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Eparchy, a suffragan of the Metropolitan Archeparchy of Addis Ababa, and the laying of the foundation stone of the new and first Cathedral, which Eparch Lisane-Christos has described as a "sign of a new era of grace."

“While the foundation stone will be laid during the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Eparchy of Bahir Dar-Dessie, the construction of the Cathedral is a long-term project that will require ongoing support after the festivities end,” the Eparch stated, acknowledging the logistical challenges of building such a structure during a period marked by regional unrest.

Despite the surrounding instability, church leaders are framing this important anniversary as a testament to resilience and “God's saving work.” The Eparch described the anniversary as a milestone marked by both spiritual reflection and a call for solidarity as the Amhara region continues to grapple with a devastating conflict. The region is currently embroiled in a persistent war that has disrupted daily life, displaced thousands, and created a dire humanitarian situation.

As a result of the ongoing conflict, 4.9 million students are currently out of school. Furthermore, health centers lack medical personnel and medications for both treatment and prevention. However, despite cultural, ethnic, and linguistic differences, communities have intermingled, and there is a strong social bond among the people. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 14/1/2026)
