Kathmandu (Agenzia Fides) - The Education Council of Nepal has granted to the Salesian School at Lubhu (near Kathmandu) formal recognition which will allow the pupils to complete their secondary education. According to the Salesian news bulletin ANS, the Salesians have been involved in the cultural and educational promotion of young Nepalese since 1997, the year they arrived in the poor and under-developed area of Lubhu, about 14km from Kathmandu.
In 2002 they opened a Salesian school at Lubhu which today has 455 pupils in classes of different grades. From the lowest grades lessons are given in Nepalese and English. Besides the school the Salesians also run a boarding school and are involved in youth pastoral promoted by the Vicariate Apostolic and sustained by the Salesian communities in Bangalore and Calcutta with the sending of personnel. The head master of the school Fr Vincent Mondol who promoted the state recognition, said they expect an increase in numbers and classes and therefore work has begun to enlarge the school to give more local children the opportunity to learn.
