AMERICA/CANADA - The Pope appoints new Bishop Coadjutor of Mackenzie-Fort Smith

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI on 23 June 2007 appointed Rev. Murray Chatlain of the clergy of Saskatoon, parish priest at St. Patrick’s Church (Saskatoon), Coadjutor Bishop of the diocese of MacKenzie-Fort Smith (Canada).
The Bishop elect Murray Chatlain was born on 19 January 1963 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. After attending local schools he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy at the University of Saskatchewan, and then a Masters of Divinity at St Peter’s Seminary in London, Ontario. He was ordained a priest on 15 May 1987 for the diocese of Saskatoon. Since his ordination he has ministered as follows: 1987-2000: pastoral work in various parishes in Saskatoon, including St. Paul’s Cathedral, Lanham, Arlee, Radisson, Asquitch, St. Michael’s, St. John Bosco and Immaculate Heart of Mary; Chaplain at City Hospital, Saskatoon, at Bishop Mahoney High School and Holy Cross High School, Guadalupe House (Centro per "First Nation Peoples"), Saskatoon; 2000-2001: Sabbatical year to study the Dene language; 2001-2002: pastoral ministry at the parishes of Kindersley, Marengo and Dosland; 2002-2005: pastoral ministry in the diocese of MacKenzie- Fort Smith at Black Lake and Fond-du-Lac. Since 2005 parish priest at St. Patrick’s Church, Saskatoon.
The diocese of MacKenzie-Fort Smith, suffragan of Grouard-McLennan, was created in 1967, it has a vast area of 1,523,400sq km and a population of 43,047 including about 22,000 Catholics (51,1%) gathered in 38 parishes assisted by 10 priests (6 diocesan and 4 religious, Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate OMI).
