ASIA/INDIA - The Pope appoints new Bishop of Amravati

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI on 8 June 2007 appointed Mgr Lourdes Daniel, Bishop of Amravati (India). Until now Mgr Daniel was Vicar General of the diocese of Poona (India).
The Bishop elect was born on 19 February 1947 at Dehu Road diocese of Poona. He was educated at St. Jude High School, Pune. Before entering the seminary he was employed by a private company. He went to St. Pius X, major seminary in Bombay. He was ordained a priest on 19 April 1980 for the diocese of Poona. Since then he has ministered as follows: 1980-1982: assistant priest at St. John's Church, Ahmednagar; 1982-1984: assistant priest at St. Ignatius Church, Poona; 1984-1987: rector of Prakash Bhavan Minor Seminary; 1987-1991: parish priest at St. Ignatius Church, Poona; 1991-1996: parish priest at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Poona; 1996-1997: Diploma in Christian Spirituality at Adhyatma Vidya Pitham, Bangalore; 1997-2001: Spiritual Director at the Papal Seminary of Puna; since 2001,Vicar General of the diocese of Poona.
