AFRICA/SOUTH AFRICA - Fire in Catholic Hospital for AIDS patients: heroic Sr Anne Thole dies trying to rescue patients

Pretoria (Agenzia Fides) - Sr Anne Thole, aged 35 died trying to save patients from a fire at Duduza Hospice for people with AIDS at the Maria Ratschitz Catholic mission near Wasbank in the north of KwaZulu-Natal, 30 km from Dundee, South Africa.
The fire started in the afternoon of Saturday 31 March. “The sisters ran to help with the rescue work but sadly three of the five patients inside the building died. One of the younger sisters, Sr Anne, in charge of novices, who was helping the rescue workers, was also killed in the fire” said a report sent to Fides by Catholic Health Care Association of Southern Africa(CATHCA which provides free anti-retroviral therapy to people with AIDS who cannot afford these expensive drugs.
