Lahore (Agenzia Fides) - To promote respect for the rights of women and equal opportunities for all women the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Pakistan has launched a new project Catholic Women’s Association CWO.
A first CWO training workshop was organised for diocesan coordinators from 9-13 February to discuss activities and strategy implementation. The training course included the following topics: concept of human rights; women’s rights phenomenon; women’s rights movements in Pakistan; legal system and legal rights of citizens and socio political analysis; civil society organisation working for the welfare of women; the role of Catholic women internationally; Pakistan’s Constitution and Law; Church history and women..
The project aims at facilitating the formation of Catholic Women’s Association groups in Pakistan’s seven dioceses, enabling women to speak out for themselves The workshop was organised by national CWO coordinator Ms Sunita Fredrick.
The CWO will deal with themes relative to the role and condition of women in Pakistan in general and in the Christian community. Women, it was said during the workshop, must realise their calling and capability to be channels of peace and reconciliation in society, starting with the family. In Pakistan many women still suffer oppression, discrimination, lack of respect for their dignity and their rights. The local Catholic community intends to help all women realise their dignity and obtain equal rights and opportunities. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 16/2/2007 Righe: 26 Parole: 269)
