AMERICA/PERU - Building stronger ties between north and south America: Lima diocese and Canadian Pembroke diocese unite in programme of assistance for children

Lima (Agenzia Fides) - A delegation of 47 Catholics from the diocese of Pembroke in Canada accompanied by the Bishop Richard Smith, travelled to Lima (Peru) to sign a cooperation agreement on various programmes of assistance for the most needy people in the capital. During the short ceremony at the Archbishop’s Residence Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani thanked the Canadian delegation for the visit underlining the importance of spiritual values. "If our spiritual values are in order the material values will take care of themselves. Some in North America forget the spiritual part and give more value to material things " the Cardinal said.
The Bishop of the diocese of Pembroke, Richard Smith signed a three year agreement to support social assistance projects undertaken by the archdiocese of Lima. The Bishop said the aim of the visit was to forge a strong bond of prayer so that North and South America can become a united continent through reciprocal help. The three year project signed by Pembroke (Canada) and Lima (Peru), will include support for nutritional health of children in camps in the district of Chorrillos, with a programme of feeding, preventive-promotional education.
