AMERICA/URUGUAY - “Building history at the Heart of the world”: 30th National Laity Meeting to strengthen bonds, identity and mission

Thursday, 7 September 2006

Montevideo (Agenzia Fides) - More than 350 lay Catholics will come together on 17 September for the 30th National Laity Meeting organised by the Uruguay Bishops’ commission for the laity. Representatives of the country’s dioceses and 60 church movements and associations will reflect on the role of lay Catholics in society, the economy for example, the situation of women, emigration, the world of disability, prisons, the media. The theme of the meeting is "Building History at the Heart of the World".
The organisers say the meeting is an opportunity for all Uruguay’s lay Catholics, through their representatives, to share their situation and aspirations, to strengthen the bonds which unite them, the identity which convokes them and the mission which drives them. "It will be a time - we read in the presentation - to renew our profession of faith and strengthen our identity as brothers and sisters, children of God who loves us and calls us to his table, the Eucharist”.
The main themes of the meeting will be: memory, identity and projection to the future. The aim is to celebrate memory of many meetings at different times in the history of the country and recall people who helped build the nation. The participants will look at the past to find all that can help for today, to give meaning and project towards the future. The meeting will be time to rediscover the riches of Uruguayan history and together build a proposal for the future on which to build a new society. The meeting will also include group-discussion on communications; celebration of the sacrament of the Eucharist; emigration, youth and uprooting; economy with solidarity; lay vocation and mission; professional ethics; social/political involvement; co-responsibility of the laity in the path of the Church.
