AFRICA - Red Cross and Red Crescent distribute 28,000 mosquito nets to prevent malaria in 9 African countries

Wednesday, 5 July 2006

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent FICR will distribute 28,000 mosquito nets in nine countries of east and southern Africa to protect 100.000 children and pregnant mothers from malaria.
FICR explained that the nets, treated with pesticide which kills the mosquito which transmits the malaria parasite, will be distributed to families in Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Prompt distribution of mosquito nets is crucial for reducing infant morality in communities involved in the programme seeing that malaria kills at least 3,000 of the world’s children every day.
FICR will pay the transport costs and the respective national Red Cross Societies will distribute the nets which are supplied by the London based NGO World Swim for Malaria.
The organisations have already worked together for a few months distributing 2 million mosquito nets in Niger. (AP) (5/7/2006 Agenzia Fides; Righe:19; Parole: 175)
