Monday, 29 September 2025

Luoyang (Agenzia Fides) - On the morning of September 6, 2025, His Exc. Msgr. Placidus Pei Ronggui, Coadjutor Emeritus of the Diocese of Luoyang, Henan Province, Mainland China, passed away at the age of 92. The Prelate was born on June 8, 1933, in Zhengding, Hebei Province. He joined the Trappist religious community and was ordained a priest in 1981. In 1989, while he was parish priest of Youtong, he was arrested by the police and spent several years in prison. On October 14, 2003, he was consecrated Bishop - but without the prior consent of the Holy See - by the then Bishop of Luoyang, His Exc. Msgr. Li Hongye, who appointed him as his Coadjutor. In 2011, Msgr. Pei resigned, which Pope Benedict XVI accepted, simultaneously regularizing his canonical position. In carrying out his pastoral ministry, both as a priest and as a bishop, Msgr. Pei was a zealous and courageous evangelizer and promoter of vocations.
The diocese of Luoyang today has about ten thousand faithful, is served by about twenty priests, and benefits from the presence of a female diocesan congregation. (Agenzia Fides, 29/9/2025)
