ASIA/INDIA - The Catholic Church in India “all you ever wanted to know”: Bishops give new look to information web site

Friday, 9 June 2006

New Delhi (Agenzia Fides) - The information web site belonging to the Indian Catholic Bishops’ Conference has been updated in design, functionality, contents and links with the motto “The Church in India: all you ever wanted to know”. The Bishops hope www.theindiancatholic.com will be increasingly useful for Catholics and anyone interested in Church activities, history, structures in India and Catholic teaching.
Bishops’ Conference spokesman Fr Babu Joseph said the service hopes to soon include a history profile and report on each diocese to reveal the composite nature, spiritual and cultural richness of the Church in India, like a mosaic made of many little coloured tiles.
The web site, run by the Bishops’ Media and Information Office, collects and diffuses information and news of the many different Catholic communities in this country, the world’s largest democracy. It gives information on the history of the Church in India, its activities and missionary endeavours, and on the three Catholic rites: Latin, Syro-Malabar e Syro-Malankar present in this subcontinent which has a population of one billion only 2% Christian.
The friendly web site, besides offering information for Catholics also wishes to inform other Christians and non Christians about the peaceful intentions of the Catholic Church since Christians are increasingly targeted in various parts of India by groups of Hindu nationalist extremists which accuse Christians of using social services as a mask for proselytising(Agenzia Fides 9/6/2006 righe: 25 parole: 250)
