AFRICA/TANZANIA - Appointment of Auxiliary Bishop of Mbeya

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On March 9, the Holy Father appointed the Reverend Godfrey Jackson Mwasekaga, of the clergy of the metropolitan archdiocese of Mbeya, Tanzania, until now vicar general of Mbeya and parish priest of Saint Francis of Assisi in Mwanjelwa, as auxiliary bishop of the same metropolitan archdiocese of Mbeya, assigning him the titular see of Thuburbo minus.
Msgr. Godfrey Jackson Mwasekaga was born on 7 March 1976 in Kyela, Mbeya. He studied at the Saint Augustin Major Seminary in Peramiho and was ordained a priest on 14 July 2005 for the clergy of Mbeya.
After ordination, he first held the roles of deputy parish priest of Saint Peter Claver in Mlowo (2005-2008 and 2017-2018), director of the Catechesis Office of the archdiocese and director of the Catechetical Training Center (2006-2008). He was awarded a licentiate in sacred theology from the San Tommaso Theological Institute in Messina, Italy, and a doctorate in theology from the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome (2008-2017), and went on to serve as parish priest of Saint Peter Claver in Mlowo (2018-2019). Since 2017 he has been director of the Catechesis Office of the archdiocese and director of the Catechetical Training Center and coordinator of liturgy; and since 2019, vicar general of the archdiocese of Mbeya and parish priest of Saint Francis of Assisi in Mwanjelwa.
