Dosso (Agenzia Fides) - "Young people play an important role in the Christian community of Dosso, as in all communities where there are young people," said the missionary Father Rafael Casamayor to Fides on the occasion of the Diocesan Youth Day which brought together, from 24 to 26 November 2023, around four hundred young people from the various missions in the capital of Niger, at the Mariama College” in Niamey. "About thirty came from the parish of Dosso who shared moments of joy, overcoming barriers, fears and shyness," continued the missionary of the Society of African Missions.
African society in the Sahel is in transition due to widespread violence perpetrated by various groups and several coups (see Fides 27/7/2023). "And in this climate of instability," adds Father Casamayor, "the Diocesan Youth Days took place, during which the young people were able to come into contact with other cultures and young people of different origins... The focus of the encounters was study, the exchange of opinions, the commitment to caring for the common home, dialogue, animation and prayer. Many of the young people were Benineses studying nursing and health care in Dosso. In our Catholic community there are Caritas groups, mission groups, a prayer school and a group studying the Songhay-Zarma language and its history. There are also sports and musical activities that are organized depending on the possibilities and time available. I believe that these events were very positive for everyone," he said.
