AFRICA/CHAD - Chad is the fifth country in the world for the number of refugees per capita compared to the population

N'Djamena (Agenzia Fides) - Despite being one of the poorest countries in the world, Chad hosts almost a million refugees, of which about 75% are Sudanese, 21% come from the Central African Republic and 4% from Nigeria and other neighboring countries. These are official data from the World Bank, according to which the Sahelian country hosts the twelfth largest number of refugees in the world and the fifth in sub-Saharan Africa after Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but above all it is the fifth country in the world in number of refugees per capita compared to the population.
The crisis in neighboring Sudan is contributing to a significant increase in forced displacement in Chad, with 400,000 new arrivals recorded since April 15, 2023, the day the conflict in Sudan began. Most refugees have been in Chad for more than 15 years, thanks to the policies of the N'Djamena government and significant contributions from international development partners. However, the government's policy of opening to Sudanese refugees has implications for Chadian internal politics, as local sources point out to Fides. “Granting Chadian citizenship to people from Sudan, some of whom are related by family and tribal ties to the President's clan, may influence the Chadian elections,” the sources say. “Finally, some of them will complement the local security forces, effectively becoming mercenaries at the service of the current regime.” (L.M.)
