ASIA/JAPAN - Erection of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Osaka-Takamatsu and appointment of the first Metropolitan Archbishop

Osaka (Fides News Agency) - The Holy Father Francis, on the 15th of August 2023, erected the new Metropolitan Archdiocese of Osaka-Takamatsu, to merge the Archdiocese of Osaka and the Diocese of Takamatsu.

The Holy Father nominated the first Metropolitan Archbishop of the new Archdiocese, H. Em. Cardinal Thomas Aquino Manyo Maeda, hitherto Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Osaka.
Most Eminent Cardinal Thomas Aquino Manyo Maeda was born on March 3, 1949 in Tsuwasaki, Kami Goto, Nagasaki Prefecture, in the Archdiocese by the same name. After his studies at Nanzan High School in Nagasaki, he entered the Saint Sulpitius Major Seminary in Fukuoka.

He was ordained on March 19, 1975 and incardinated in the Archdiocese of Nagasaki.

On June 13, 2011, he was appointed Bishop of the Dioceses of Hiroshima, and received episcopal consecration on September 23. The Metropolitan Archbishop of Osaka since 2014, he was created Cardinal on June 28, 2018 with the Title of S. Pudenziana.
