ASIA/HONG KONG - Children's almsgiving, cleaning in homes for the elderly: concrete works of Lenten charity in the diocese of Hong Kong

Monday, 27 March 2023

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) - Once again this year, the fundraising committee of the Lenten Movement of the diocese of Hong Kong has proposed simple and concrete gestures to practice the works of charity that traditionally accompany the Lenten journey of the people of God and "help others with these acts of love", as the executive director of the Committee said.
Envelopes and boxes, which often replicate the shape of the Easter lamb, have been distributed by many parishes in Hong Kong to boys and girls who use them during the week to deposit small offerings to bring to church on Sunday. Boys and girls have been advised to "take advantage" of the Lenten period to reduce the time wasted each day playing video games and excessive smartphone use. In some parishes, lay groups have launched "Lenten Cleansing Day", offering free home cleaning services for elderly people in need. Dozens of volunteers went two by two to the homes of elderly and isolated people, to meet them, offer them spiritual comfort and thoroughly clean their homes.
During the time of Lent, the diocesan pastoral commission for the family also offered suggestions and pastoral aids to help Christian couples live the Lenten journey also in the ordinary of family life, also through the sharing of simple gestures dear to the Christian people such as the recitation of the evening prayer with the children.
