Lomè (Agenzia Fides) - "There are many expectations for the new year that the Togolese would like to see fulfilled in 2023, in the political, economic, socio-cultural spheres", writes Fr. Silvano Galli. The missionary, who left Kolowarè in December 2021 and has been a formator in the preparatory seminar of the Society for African Missions in the capital Lomé for more than a year.
"On a political level," continues Father Galli, who has been living and working in Togo since 2004, "in addition to the democracy that they have been demanding for years, the Togolese also want transparency in political affairs and non-interference of politicians in certain areas. The Togolese also want this transparency in the economic area". The missionary affirms the need for well-managed and equitably distributed economic and financial resources so that everyone can benefit from them. "But it is important that the economy - one of the pillars of the country's development - is freed from corruption. In the socio-cultural sphere, the Togolese are waiting for the promised increase in the minimum wage to come into force. May they not just be words, empty promises, but contributes to improving people's standard of living".
Regarding the health system, the priest underlines the precarious situation and hopes that the public hospitals will be better managed and equipped so that people are not forced to go to private clinics reserved for the wealthy.
All Togolese wish to live in peace and harmony.
"We hope above all that the sad situation of the conflict in the north of the country will find a quick solution in the form of unity and reconciliation," emphasizes the Italian missionary
The Superior General of the Society for African Missions, Father Antonio Porcellato, is also visiting Lomé these days to spend a month meeting missionaries and faithful in Lomé, where he himself lived for five years in the past. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 9/1/2023)
