Jerusalem (Agenzia Fides) - King Abdullah II, in his recent speech at the UN General Assembly, described in a "truthful and honest" way the reality of Christian communities in Jerusalem and throughout the Holy Land. The recognition is given to the Hashemite Monarch by the Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches of Jerusalem, who express gratitude to King Abdullah, once again giving him the traditional nickname of "Custodian of Christian and Muslim Holy Sites" in the land of Jesus. The Heads of the Churches express their appreciation for the words with which the Sovereign confirmed his constant commitment to the protection of the historical and legal status quo that governs coexistence between the different communities of faith in Jerusalem, in the face of the new "dangers" that seem to undermine historical heritage of the Christian presence in the Holy City.
" As custodians of Jerusalem's Muslim and Christian holy sites", he king said, at the 77th annual UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday 20 September "we are committed to protecting the historical and legal status quo and to their safety and future… And as a Muslim leader", added the Hashemite Monarch "let me say clearly, that we are committed to defending the rights, precious heritage and historic identity of the Christian people of our region".
King Abdullah defined Christianity as "vital to the past and present of our region and the Holy Land", adding that the Christian contribution to the plural identity of the Holy Land "must remain an integral part of our future". (GV) (Agenzia Fides, 28/9/2022)
